24th Annual Heritage Day

Plans are well underway for the North Brunswick 32nd Annual Heritage Day, which will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m at the North Brunswick Community Park on Route 130 So.,near the Rennaissance Shopping Plaza.  In case of bad weather a rain date of September 21st has been scheduled. The event is designed to celebrate North Brunswick’s history and the rich heritage of the people who live there.

Andrew Zastko, co-owner of Gloria Zastko, Realtors, has been involved with Heritage Day for the past 24 years, and has had the privilege of chairing this township-wide event for the past 16 years.  Zastko invites “everyone to join for a day of fun where we become one to celebrate our heritage.”   Zastko is a lifetime resident of North Brunswick, who believes “in giving back to the community.” Zastko states, “I want to give recognition to all committee members who work on a voluntary basis throughout the year, and of course, on the day of the event, and to the Township workers who volunteer their time and efforts.”

With something for everyone, this year’s event features music from Barynya Entertainment, Nicos Nicolaides Orchestra, Metropolitan Festival Band, David Cedeno Orchestra and Virago Music.  In addition to the Main Stage, the crowd can watch Audry Davis African Dance, the 4H Indian Langoor dancers, a Mad Science Experiment and other performers in the Kids Tent and Dance Pavilion. Children of all ages can enjoy face painting, a unicycle show, pony rides, petting zoo, and carriage rides all day.

New to the event is Burger Mania which is a burger cook-off, restaurants in the area will join the day and compete for the title of “Best in Town”.  The contest will be judged throughout the day and the selected restaurant will win based on the popular vote as well as a vote from a panel of judges.  Also new to the event is the New Jersey 350th Anniversary Art Competition, deadline for entries is September 15th.

The day culminates with a ceremony at 7:00 p.m. to pay tribute to the late Bruce Chandlee, whom is being honored as this year’s Heritage Day Award recipient.  The ceremony will be followed by a performance from British Invasion Tribute Band playing more than just music of the Beatles.  The night ends with a spectacular fireworks display.

The event is made possible by grant funding from the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and The Township of North Brunswick.
